The 1990 videotape “A Parents’ Guide to Asbestos in the Schools” was meant to help parents know when asbestos, a material often used in commercial and school buildings, is and is not dangerous, what makes it hazardous, and how the Asbestos Emergency Response Act (AHERA) works to protect workers and children in the schools. This 19-minute videotape is a series of interviews with experts from government, and the medical, academic, and asbestos remediation fields. It reflects a view that risk communication is important for a variety of reasons:
- To inform the public and affected members of the public about actual or potential health hazards;
- To provide this information in a clear, accessible manner; and
- To answer questions that may be beyond the specific expertise of local officials or company personnel.
